Report a Litter Program: All licensed drivers have a responsibility to make sure debris is not accidently or intentionally discarded from their vehicle. The Report a Litterer Program will serve as a reminder to drivers and passengers that it is illegal to do so. To report a litterer, simply notify the Lynchburg Police Department (434-455-6118). An advisory letter will be sent to the owner of the vehicle informing them of the violation. No charges will be filed, and no further action will be taken; but we hope this will serve as a reminder of the law and discourage these actions in the future. Littering is illegal and anyone convicted of this offense can be fined up to $1,000 and/or be sentenced for up to 12 months in jail. Litter is harmful and costly! "Clean Virginia Waterways" and the Virginia Department of Forestry report increasing monetary and environmental costs to our society that result from forest fires, aquatic debris, and litter related injuries and deaths. Costs are escalating for litter clean-up and prevention programs across the state. VDOT alone spends more than $7 million annually to pick-up along the roadways. If you witness someone in Lynchburg littering from their car, you may anonymously report the incident by calling (434) 455-6118.

Litter is Everyone's Business!

Throughout the year we welcome all individuals and organizations to partner with us to help clean Lynchburg's streets, so contact us! We know Lynchburg's dirtiest little secrets and will share that information and cleanup supplies that you will need to make a difference in our city. We can accommodate almost any number of volunteers for an hour or two or for the whole day.

It's your city; handle it with care.
