CCL, Inc. and Lynchburg Public Works Host the 12th Annual Great American Cleanup/March on Litter: CCL, Inc. will again partner with the Lynchburg Public Works in sponsoring a city-wide cleanup day on March 27, 2010. Individuals and groups are invited to join us on this day of "just clean fun" at the Lynchburg Community Market, 12th and Main streets starting at 9 a.m.. The first 100 registrants will receive a Kousa Dogwood seedling. You can register to win a Troy Bilt 29cc Straight Shaft Trimmer. An assigned street and all cleanup supplies will be furnished. Refreshments will be available. CCL, Inc. participates in the Keep America Beautiful/Great American Cleanup and encourage all of you to "come on down to the market". Last year we had about 200 people remove over a ton of trash from Lynchburg streets. Now that the snow has melted, and we can see what lies along our roads, we expect at least another ton this year! We encourage everyone to contact us at ksmith@cleanlynchburg.com. All mail should be directed to Citizens for a Clean Lynchburg, Inc., c/o Department of Public Works, 1700 Memorial Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24501. We look forward to working with you in making Lynchburg "The Cleanest City in the Commonwealth".

Report a Litter Program: All licensed drivers have a responsibility to make sure debris is not accidently or intentionally discarded from their vehicle. The Report a Litterer Program will serve as a reminder to drivers and passengers that it is illegal to do so. To report a litterer, simply notify the Lynchburg Police Department (434-455-6118). An advisory letter will be sent to the owner of the vehicle informing them of the violation. No charges will be filed, and no further action will be taken; but we hope this will serve as a reminder of the law and discourage these actions in the future. Littering is illegal and anyone convicted of this offense can be fined up to $1,000 and/or be sentenced for up to 12 months in jail. Litter is harmful and costly! "Clean Virginia Waterways" and the Virginia Department of Forestry report increasing monetary and environmental costs to our society that result from forest fires, aquatic debris, and litter related injuries and deaths. Costs are escalating for litter clean-up and prevention programs across the state. VDOT alone spends more than $7 million annually to pick-up along the roadways. If you witness someone in Lynchburg littering from their car, you may anonymously report the incident by calling (434) 455-6118.

Litter is Everyone's Business!

Green Spring Expo-Saturday, April 10: CCL, Inc. will be at the Lynchburg Armory on Saturday, April 10 to support Green Spring Expo. This annual spring event features green businesses and organizations. Entertainment and fun are around every corner. Come join the green revolution. It's not easy being green, but it's a lot of fun.

Earth Day - April 22. Celebrate Earth Day Every Day. The 40th anniversary of Earth Day will be celebrated on April 22, 2010.

Water Stewardship. Citizens for a Clean Lynchburg has endorsed a new community based project that encourages citizens to stop polluting our rivers and streams and to conserve water. This program has been running in Arlington County for some time and will be started throughout Virginia this year. With seed money from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Lynchburg will be one of the first sites to participate. The City of Lynchburg Sustainability Council chaired by Ms. Bonnie Svercik, Deputy City Manager, is supporting the program. She is looking for five to eight families in one neighborhood who are willing to become pilot team. For more information, contact Ken Smith at ksmith@cleanlynchburg.com.

Throughout the year we welcome all individuals and organizations to partner with us to help clean Lynchburg's streets, so contact us! We know Lynchburg's dirtiest little secrets and will share that information and cleanup supplies that you will need to make a difference in our city. We can accommodate almost any number of volunteers for an hour or two or for the whole day.

It's your city; handle it with care.
