Water Stewardship. Citizens for a Clean Lynchburg has endorsed a new community based project that encourages citizens to stop polluting our rivers and streams and to conserve water. This program has been running in Arlington County for some time and will be started throughout Virginia this year. With seed money from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Lynchburg will be one of the first sites to participate. The City of Lynchburg Sustainability Council chaired by Ms. Bonnie Svercik, Deputy City Manager, is supporting the program which will be primarily run by Ms. Adrienne Averett, Water Supply Manger, DEQ. She is looking for five to eight families in one neighborhood who are willing to become pilot team. For more information, contact Ken Smith at ksmith@cleanlynchburg.com.
Wetlands Training Classes. ALL CLASSES ARE FULL, only waiting list applicants are being accepted. Citizens for a Clean Lynchburg, Inc. and Lynchburg College Claytor Nature Study Center are offering FREE wetland education courses at the Claytor Nature Study Center on August 4 (Wonders of Wetlands), August 5 (Wonders of Wetlands Faciliatator), and August 6 (Planning of Wetlands). WOW! is for educators, classroom teachers, refuge managers, nature center interpreters, park service educators, and others who will find useful background information and stimultating activities to fit their program. WOW! Facilitator training is for those interested in training other WOW! instructors. POW! was developed for educators interested in creating, restoring, or enhancing, and then monitoring a wetland in their schoolyard. Educators in schools, refuges, nature centers, parks, and many other settings who are interested in designing and constructing planned wetlands will find POW! to be a valuable resource guide as well as a source of hands-on activities. You may register on line at: www.wetland.org/education_schedule.htm or by phone: 410-745-9620 or by e-mail: order@wetland.org. Claytor Nature Study Center is a lovely place to spend a few days, and the training ain't bad either!
